Orderly books, November 18, 1777 - February 28, 1779. Two are kept by Peter Taulman, one by Joshua Drake. The first covers time at Whitemarsh; the next three are dated from Valley Forge, and the fifth includes some time at Valley Forge, followed by the campaign leading up to the battle of Monmouth, then a march to West Point. The sixth is dated from West Point, the seventh from Westchester County. They include material on courts-martial, hygiene in camp, and shortages, especially of clothing, shoes and flints. They also include a few congressional resolutions.

A Founding Father, he served as the third vice president of the United States during President Thomas Jefferson's first term from 1801 to 1805. In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
